Tell about the process and our excitement

(additional info about the approach will be in the Math page under Academics)

Mathematics

We’re really proud of our mathematics program at SVAE—and it’s getting even better. SVAE ranked in the 80th percentile nationally in our ITBS scores. We scored 1st among Adventist schools in the Potomac Conference (which covers the State of Virginia, and the Washington Metropolitan Area).

K-5th

The program is Math In Focus: Singapore Math by Marshall Cavendish.  This new approach will help develop new skills when trying to solve word problems and will promote a greater number sense.  This new approach will systematically move students from the concrete to pictorial to abstract which naturally leads to a greater confidence and mastery.

Why Singapore Math?

Since the Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMMS) began in 1995, Singapore has consistently ranked at the top. In 2007 SIngapore outscored the United States by 70 points. We at SVAE want to be a part of an upward turn for our students, We want them to have a strong foundation of number sense that develops into strong  place-value-based computational strategies.

How will this affect my child?

We are not going to lie to you; this is a totally new way of “learning math.” We believe our students, your children, need to have better critical thinking skills. The introduction and implementation of this new program will be difficult and may cause temporary frustration. This is normal. The goal-the end game- is worth the extra effort. Our students will learn to problem solve, to not just calculate numbers but to understand the entire process.

6th-8th

The program is Big Ideas. We  piloted this program during the 2012-2013 school year with one of our smaller math classes, and feel that the approach and rigor that are used will help our students to become even more successful with math.

Both programs help students to develop a greater understanding of “why” we do what we do in regards to math.  Students will also benefit by discovering that there is more than one way to come up with an answer and will be able to articulate steps that were taken to get to the end result.  Also with these programs, much emphasis will be given to the process versus just getting the right answer.
